Dog Days of Summer

"Dog Days of Summer" it's a phrase common to most, but what does it really mean and where did it originate? Most people associate it with hottest temperatures of the year. The Farmers’ Almanac defines it as July 3 thru August 11 the "“hottest and most unbearable days of the season”. There are other thoughts such as "hot days not fit for a dog,” or " dogs being lazy and lying about" or "the hot sun causing dogs to go mad."

Actually, the phrase has more to do with the stars. You see, according to the Oxford English Dictionary: “The hottest part of the summer, associated in ancient times with heliacal rising of the Dog Star in the Mediterranean area, and formerly considered to be the unhealthiest period of the year and a time of ill omen.”  Merriam-Webster defines “dog days” as “the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere.”

Here at MuttBags, we see it as marking the end of Summer as we exit out of "The Dog Days of Summer" into the more friendly days of Fall. The days will be getting shorter and shorter, the sun will move lower in the horizon, morning will be a bit cooler, and more people will be out walking their dogs and extending those walks further. It is also the time of year to stock up on bags and to place those stations where needed, before the ground gets too cold.  So, take advantage of our low prices to stock on your Pet Waste Stations, Dog Waste Bags, Aluminum Pet Waste Cans, Pet Waste Bag Dispensers, and more.
